Abstract

Colloidal lithography on mica has been combined with subsequent thermal evaporation, sputtering, and template-stripping processes to produce ultraflat ternary nanopatterns of large lateral extension (see Figure). The resulting surface is particularly useful for applications that demand proper distinction between complex surface chemistry and topography.

In this consideration we neglect the shrinking of the free interstitial aperture due to metal deposition on top of the particles since during evaporation the metal is mainly deposited on the upper half of the particles and thus has little effect on the gap between the evaporated gold nanofeatures and the edge of the particle (point X of Fig. 1b). Furthermore we consider only the limit of small deposition thicknesses as verified by the result of our estimation i.e. d = 0.3 r.
