Chiroptical properties of poly{2, 5‐bis[(S)‐2‐methylbutoxy]‐1, 4‐phenylene vinylene}

Abstract
The photoluminescent and electroluminescent properties of conjugated polymers are, in part, controlled by interchain interactions in solid films. A study of the (chir)optical properties of optically active BMB‐PPV (see Figure) shows that circular dichroism spectroscopy is very powerful in detecting association of the polymer. Two different forms of BMB‐PPV are reported to be present in solution, depending on the solvent. magnified image

Attempted recording of13C‐NMR spectra (100.4 MHz) was not successful due to extremely low solubility of BMB‐PPV in chloroform‐d (‐0.05 mg/mL)
26. GPC analysis of BMB‐PPV in either THF or chloroform with an PLgel column (5 μm. 104A. 300 × 7.5 mm2) showed unreproducible results due to aggregation on the column. The strong tendency of BMB‐PPV to aggregate is a result of the relatively short sidechains in combination with a highly symmetrical and regular polymer chain. Currently less‐symmetrical chiral co‐polymers consisting of differently substituted PPV's are being synthesized and characterized to overcome this problem.

28. In the discussions presented here we do not distinguish interchain interactions between different polymer chains from those between two parts of a single but folded polymer chain.
