Abstract

New, synthetically accessible, soluble, stable all‐carbon‐backbone polymers are reported. The polytriacetylenes (see Fig.) represent an intermediate step between polydiacetlylenes and carbyne and as such are of interest as alternatives for known conjugated polymers. The synthesis, film casting, and interesting properties are discussed. magnified image

19. Fourier spectrometers based on the Michelson interferometer equipped with a Hg are source and a deuterated triglycerine sulfate detector in the FIR spectral range and a tungsten lamp and an InSb photodetector in the mid‐infrared range were utilized. In the visible frequency rangs a homemade spectrometer based on a Zeiss monochromator with a tungsten halogen lamp and a phototube for the detector was employed. The samples were analyzed as powder pressed pellets for the reflectivity measurements and as thin films for the transmission measurements. For the latter investigations thin films were obtained by the spin coating method which deposited polymer4on thin microscope slide glass plates.

23. The laser source was a Nd/YAG laser (Continuum Surelite wavelength 1.064 μm and pulse duration 5 ns) which was used to pump a H2 gas Raman cell. After the first Stokes line (s‐polarized λ=1.907 μm) had been selected and isolated the pulses were focused on the sample with a 50 cm lens. The samples were placed in a vacuum chamber so that interference contributions of the atmosphere could be eliminated. The samples were placed in a commercially available fused silica cuvette (Hellma) with an optical path length of about 1 mm. THG measurements were done by rotating the sample perpendicular to the beam axis to generate a THG interference pattern. Analysis of this interference pattern provides a measurement of the relative (to fused silica) third‐order susceptibility X(3)(—3ω;ω ω ω) and the coherence length lc=λω/[6(n3ω–nω)] of the solvent (chloroform) or polymer solution. The relative errors for the nonlinear susceptibilities and the coherence lengths are about 10% and 2% respectively. The refractive index for the polymer solution at the fundamental wavelength is assumed to be approximately the same as that for chloroform. Correction has been made for a slight absorption at the third harmonic wavelength (636 nm) for the 2% polymer solution using a complex refractive index n*=n+ ik.
