Titania/Polypyrrole Hybrid Nanocomposites Built from In‐Situ Generated Organically Functionalized Nanoanatase Building Blocks
Source abstract
Abstract
A bifunctional capping ligand is used to obtain pyrrol‐functionalized monodispersed nanocrystalline TiO2 (anatase) particles in a single step. The pyrrole functionalities in the shell are then (electro)chemically polymerized to create a polypyrrole (PPy)/TiO2 hybrid nanocomposite film (see Figure). Further electronic modification of the conducting polymer is possible, leading to a great variety of potential applications.

37. It is widely known that the strength of a β‐diketonate‐metal complex is related to the proportion of the enol tautomer. Substitution of the α‐H of a β‐diketonate decreases the enol proportion and thus the complexing power; see R. C. Mehrotra R. Bohra D. P. Gaur Metal β‐Diketonates and Allied Derivatives Academic Press London1978 p. 2.

40. Such a degrafting takes place because water cleaves a fraction of the Ti–diketonate complex. This may be due to an incomplete polymerization of the pyrrole species which leads to film porosity. Such a porous film may entrap water assisting this cleavage. Stronger complexing functions may be useful to improve resistance to the hydrolysis of the acac–Ti bond. It is known that better stability can be achieved by a) using acac‐based complexing agents substituted at the methyl side rather than at the acid methylene bridge; b) resorting to stronger complexing functions such as phosphonate instead of acac. Please note that the electropolymerized films do not present significant particle leaching suggesting the importance of the polymerization method.
