Abstract

A femtosecond‐pulsed Ti:sapphire laser is used to generate surface features in slabs of poly(dimethylsiloxane) with minimum dimensions of 1 μm—smaller than those available by rapid‐prototyping techniques using transparency masks. The fabrication of magnetic field concentrators and the addition of custom features to a generic microfluidic channel (see Figure) demonstrate the utility of the technique.

39. We diluted the water and ink solutions with ethanol (10:1) to limit the formation of bubbles.
40. Commercially available Ti:sapphire lasers have repetition rates of > 100 kHz. This increase in the repetition rate decreases the time necessary for ablation by a factor of ∼ 100 and permits an increase in the translation speed from 200 μm s–1to 10 mm s–1(this speed is near the maximum available for reasonable‐cost motorized translation stages). The combination of the increased repetition rate and the increased translation speed reduces the overall time to write a 20 mm2stamp with lines of 1 μm and a pitch of 2 μm from ∼ 14 h to ∼ 900 sec or ∼ 15 min.
