MoO 3 -Modified PbF 2 -Bi 2 O 3 –B 2 O 3 – Cr 2 O 3 Hybrid Glasses: A Study of Structural, Optical and Gamma-Ray Shielding Properties
Source abstract
Abstract
To assess the effect of molybdenum on radiation shielding efficiency, MoO 3 /PbF 2 :Bi 2 O 3 –B 2 O 3 –Cr 2 O 3 (MPBBCR) glass samples were prepared and comprehensively analyzed for structural, optical, and shielding properties. The analysis of X-ray diffraction confirms the amorphous nature of all the synthesized glasses. As MoO 3 content increased, density decreased from 4.783 to 4.469 g cm −3 , while molar volume showed a nonlinear increase from 37.58 to 39.02 cm 3 mol −1 . UV–Visible spectroscopy was employed to evaluate optical parameters including indirect bandgap energy (1.903–2.11 eV), refractive index (2.77–2.69), Racah parameters, metallization factor, and Urbach energy, indicating suitability for nonlinear optical applications. FTIR spectra revealed the presence of [BO 3 ], [BO 4 ], [MoO 4 ], and [MoO 6 ] structural units. Gamma-ray shielding parameters obtained using Phy-X/PSD over 0.015–15 MeV showed decreasing mass attenuation coefficients with increasing energy due to photoelectric absorption and Compton scattering. Moreover, HVL, TVL, and mean free path increased with energy, with effective atomic dominance. Besides Phy-X/PSD, WinXCom and Monte Carlo simulation methods were also employed to calculate the mass attenuation coefficients and evaluate the associated radiation shielding parameters of the glass samples.
