Abstract

Abstract Carbazole based small molecules are noteworthy due to their wide-spectrum of biological activities and characteristic fluorescence properties. Herein, a carbazole based bio-friendly fluorophore, 3-formyl-9-methylcarbazole (3) was covalently anchored on the APTES-modified silica nanoparticle surface which adorned a characteristic fluorescence activity to these nanoparticles. These carbazole modified fluorescent silica (CMFS) nanoparticles showed selective fluorescence sensing ability towards biomacromolecules, like DNA and an enzyme (horseradish peroxidase). CMFS nanoparticles were found to be biocompatible as these showed minimal adverse effects (compared to bare silica nanoparticles) on the development and behavioral activities of Drosophila melanogaster (fruit flies). The surface attached (non-toxic and beneficial) carbazole moieties not only enhanced the biocompatibility of the CMFS nanoparticles but also triggered-off their fluorescence activity. These fluorescent and biocompatible CMFS nanoparticles can be explored in future towards the development of bio-friendly diagnostic tools for bio-targets.
