Liquid Metal Gallium Drives Glycosidic Bonding of Glucose
Source abstract
Abstract
Abstract Gallium (Ga) is a low‐melting‐point metal with strong interfacial reactivity and desirable biocompatibility, making it promising for biomedical applications. When combined with organic materials, Ga‐based liquid metal nanodroplets (LM NDs) can yield multifunctional composites; however, the crucial interfacial interactions with organics are often overlooked. Here, we demonstrate that sonication of Ga with glucose induces glycosidic bonds, specially around LM NDs, that stabilize the droplets, reduce oxidation, and limit uncontrolled Ga 3 ⁺ release. The resulting glucose–glycoside‐Ga NDs (G‐G‐Ga NDs) nanocomposites showed effective photothermal antibacterial cleaning without the need for pre‐washing. On the other hand, based on regulated Ga 3 ⁺ release, and photothermal properties, these G‐G‐Ga NDs also presented high chemical antibacterial activity and strong biocompatibility. This finding highlights the importance of understanding materials formed by processing organic materials with liquid Ga, where novel properties and multifunctionalities can arise from both the starting components and new phases generated at the liquid metal–organic molecules interface.
