Synchronized Electro‐Chromo‐Emissive Devices Using a Mixed Ionic‐Electronic Conductive Layer for XR Applications
Source abstract
Abstract
Abstract A single‐cell‐type electro‐chromo‐emissive (ECECL) device engineered for extended reality (XR) applications, integrating electrochromic (EC) and electrochemiluminescent (ECL) functions via DC‐driven operation in a fully film‐state architecture is reported. A mixed ionic–electronic conductor layer is introduced atop a nanostructured EC polymer, significantly reducing ionic and electronic resistance and enabling ultrafast EC response. A transparent poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene) film containing 1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide serves as an electrolyte layer, bridging the EC and ECL electrodes in an all‐film configuration. The ECL layer employs a redox‐active luminophore, which not only facilitates light emission but also governs the charge balancing between electrodes. ECL emission is achieved during cathodic bias while the EC layer is in its colored state, enabling synchronized operation of both EC and ECL in a single‐cell system. The ECECL device exhibits a high optical modulation (ΔT = 78%), strong ECL luminance (54 cd m − 2 ), and rapid switching kinetics (τ col ⁰·⁹⁵ = 0.28 s; τ bl ⁰·⁹⁵ = 0.24 s). Voltage‐programmable modulation among transparent, colored, and emissive states allows for simultaneous visualization of real, virtual, and electroluminescent elements. These results establish the ECECL platform as a multifunctional XR system to see digital content in real‐time, supporting multi‐state visual logic and spectrum‐resolved information encoding.
