Abstract

Abstract Graphite like carbon (GLC) films containing different Cu contents were prepared by sputtering Cu target. The morphologies, microstructure and phase compositions of the Cu/GLC films were observed by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectrum. Mechanical and tribological properties of the Cu/GLC films were also tested. Results indicated that the composition of the Cu/GLC films was controlled by the current of Cu target. The content of sp2-C bonding in the films increased and the disordered degree of the Cu in the films decreased with increasing the Cu content from 2.3 at.% to 19.8 at.%. For the films containing high Cu content of 19.8 at.%, fcc-type crystalline structure Cu was perfect accordance. The mechanical properties were related with the disorder degree, type and the number of sp2 bonding structure. The hardness increased with increasing the Cu content (below 12.2 at.%) and reached constant when Cu content increased from 12.2 to 19.8 at.%. The hardness and the modulus of the Cu/GLC films were in the range of 13.5–24.6 GPa and 186–242 GPa, respectively. The COF of the Cu-GLC films (less than 0.2) showed a significant reduction compared with that of single GLC film (0.33). Meanwhile, the wear resistance of GLC films could be improved further with the increasing of Cu content. The improved mechanical properties were in favor of the enhancement of the tribological properties for the Cu/GLC films. The GLC film containing the highest Cu content exhibited the best tribological properties.
