Abstract

Major advances have recently been made concerning the optical properties of solid-state materials. Four notable areas of research are: upconversion and downconversion luminescence, new high-efficiency scintillator materials, and photonic band gap materials or photonic crystals. Each of these research fields has contributed greatly to our basic understanding of solid-state optical materials as well as contributing to applied research.

Upconversion materials have great application potential as luminescent materials for enhancing the efficiency of fluorescence lamps by converting their undesired (broad-band) near-infrared output into visible light. In suitable hosts, Er3+ is a very efficient upconverter, but it suffers from the fact that it absorbs near-infrared light only weakly and at very selected wavelengths. This paper shows that this problem can be overcome by co-doping Er3+ and Os4+ into the same host matrix.
