Abstract

Single-crystalline Y(OH) 3 nanowires were synthesized from Y 2 O 3 powder by a simple acetic acid assisted hydrothermal method under near neutral conditions. The nanowires show unusual, bundle-like morphology with diameter of 20−50 nm and aspect ratio of 600−2000. It is found that the presence of acetic acid and its concentration play a crucial role in determining the product morphology. In order to understand the formation mechanism of the Y(OH) 3 nanowires, the growth process was surveyed by analyzing the samples at different growth stages, and a growth mechanism was proposed.
