Abstract

This work provides a detailed overview of friction stir-based techniques, viz., friction stir processing (FSP) and additive friction stir deposition (AFSD). When dual-phase (α + β) titanium alloys are processed, two opposing mechanisms occur: significant grain growth in areas exposed to sustained temperatures above the β transus and dynamic recrystallization (DRX) due to high temperatures and strain rates. FSP induces shear textures characterized by dominant P and C fiber components, with reinforcements serving as dislocation barriers and activating selective slip systems. Conversely, in AFSD, the cooling rate is critical. Multi-layer stacking introduces repeated thermal cycles during deposition, influencing grain size, phase distribution, and variant selection.
