Abstract

Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a solid-state joining process that produces high quality joints with reduced defects and superior mechanical properties than conventional fusion welding. Although extensively investigated for flat plates and sheets, its application to thin-walled tubular structures remains limited despite their significance in lightweight engineering. This review examines advances in the longitudinal FSW of tubular structures, focusing on fabrication and post weld structural performance. It discusses key challenges associated with welding tubular geometry, including fixture and tool design, process parameters, and material flow. The review also highlights structural applications and outlines future research to advance FSW as a cost-effective manufacturing method for tubular structures.
