Abstract

SiC ceramic particle‐reinforced Ti‐Al laminated composites are essential in aerospace and high‐end equipment, but their high hardness, brittleness, and multi‐interface heterogeneity cause severe tool wear and limit machinability. This study employs thermo‐mechanical coupling modeling and orthogonal cutting experiments to investigate the material removal mechanism and dynamic thermomechanical behavior of these composites. A constitutive model incorporating multiphase interface characteristics was developed and validated using Digital Image Correlation (DIC) and high‐speed photography. Results reveal that the alternating laminated heterogeneous structure induces periodic fluctuations in cutting force, which mainly originate from the sequential cutting of different material layers and tool‐particle intermittent interactions. SiC particles act as stress concentrators, initiating cracks and forming fragmented chips. Increasing cutting depth raises the material removal volume and monotonically increases the primary cutting force. Conversely, higher cutting speeds enhance thermal softening, reduce yield strength, and progressively decrease the average cutting force. These findings provide theoretical guidance for optimizing machining processes for heterogeneous laminated composites.
