Abstract

Environmental barrier coatings (EBCs), as a protective skin of silicon-based ceramic matrix composites, play a vital role in the reliable and sustainable service of relevant components, but unfortunately incline to crack prematurely. Inspired by the fibroblast-dominated wound healing in human skins, this study develops an innovative self-healing EBC based upon ytterbium disilicate. By exposing to a simulated corrosion condition at 1300 oC, this coating still keeps intact as long as 1000 hours, achieving more than five times longer service life than conventional coatings. Incorporated with size-specific silicon carbide whiskers or particles, the coating rapidly responds to localized cracks by releasing self-healing agents, functioning like fibroblasts, to execute self-repairing. The crack resistance and long-term stability originate from in-situ formed hierarchical architectures within the coating and crack-healing mechanisms involving oxidation-induced regeneration of Yb2Si2O7.
