Improving the Elevated Temperature Wear and Oxidation Resistance of Laser Clad (CoCrFeNi)80Mo15−xWxSi5 Coatings by the Synergistic Variation of Mo and W Elements
Source abstract
Abstract
In order to extend the operation life of the piercing plug, (CoCrFeNi)80Mo15−xWxSi5 (x = 4, 8, 12 at%) HEA coatings are designed and prepared on 20CrNi3 steel surface by laser cladding. The effect of synergistic changes in the content of Mo and W elements microstructure, phase composition, mechanical properties, oxidation resistance, and wear resistance of the coatings is analyzed. The result shows that the coatings exhibit a three‐phase structure encompassing FCC + μ + Mo–Si compounds. With the increase of the ratio of W to Mo element, μ phases (Fe7W6, Co7Mo6, Co7W6) increase. However, the Mo–Si compound decreases with the (111) peak of the FCC phase shifting slightly to the left. The hardness and H/E and H3/E2 all increased with the increase of the ratio of W to Mo element, but the WxSiy mixtures increase. Compared with the substrate, the coatings show a better elevated temperature oxidation resistance since a dense oxide film is formed on the surface. When the ratio of W to Mo element reaches 8:7, the coating presents the best ordinary and elevated temperature wear performance with a low coefficient of friction and wear volume loss. In contrast, the W12 coating shows a worse wear performance because the WxSiy peels off during the wear process and exacerbates the wear of the W12 coating.
