Abstract

In this study, the ceramic coatings containing different concentrations of Zr(CO3)2 are prepared on the surface of titanium alloys by using plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) technology to improve the wear resistance of TC4 alloys. The X‐ray diffraction, Raman spectra, X‐ray computer tomography, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X‐ray analysis techniques are employed to investigate the phase composition, microstructure, and elemental distribution of the PEO ceramic coatings. The results show that the introduction of Zr(CO3)2 into the electrolyte promotes the formation of ZrTiO4 new phase in the ceramic coatings, while the t‐ZrO2, R‐TiO2, and A‐TiO2 phases are also present in the ceramic coating. Also, the incorporation of Zr(CO3)2 facilitates the reduction of coating pores and the formation of ZrTiO4 phase, significantly increasing the coating's hardness to improve the wear resistance. The coating prepared by adding 20 g L−1 Zr(CO3)2 to the electrolyte shows excellent wear resistance during frictional wear compared to other coatings, which is attributed to the reduced porosity and increased hardness and bonding force of the coating.
