Abstract

The effect of pre-strain at different temperatures on hydrogen embrittlement (HE) of FeNiCoCr high-entropy alloys was investigated through slow strain rate tension under cathodic hydrogen charging. Compared with room-temperature pre-strain, cryogenic pre-strain enhanced yield strength and alleviated HE, which was primarily attributed to the advantageous nano-twinned structure composed of massive microband–twin interactions. In addition, the cryogenically pre-strained specimen exhibited severe transgranular cracking along the twin boundaries, but much finer intergranular cracks. Pre-existing nano-twins served as effective trapping sites for diffusible hydrogen and also suppressed dynamic hydrogen transport through fresh twins.
