Abstract

The machinability of ceramic materials can be improved by the addition of hexagonal‐BN: the expensive diamond‐based tools could be replaced by cemented carbides tools lowering the machining costs. Anisotropic materials are obtained by hot pressing due to h‐BN plate‐like structure. Si3N4‐BN composites are suitable as rotor seals for gas turbine engines in the ranges 1000°C–1300°C. Oxidation resistance can be improved up to 1500°C by the addition of MoSi2.
