Abstract

Bulk fine‐grained 2024 Al alloy is prepared by spark plasma sintering and subsequent thermal–mechanical treatment. Bulk sample with mean grain size of 2.68 μm is firstly sintered using gas‐atomized 2024 Al alloy powder. After subsequent solid solution, cold rolling and aging processing, bulk fine‐grained 2024 Al alloy with simultaneously enhanced strength and ductility is obtained. Specifically, the tensile strength and total tensile elongation of the peak‐aged sample are 583 MPa and 16%, respectively. The enhanced strength is mainly attributed to the refined grain size and the high number density of nano‐precipitates. The enhanced ductility is attributed to the regained work‐hardening capability by aging.
