The Effect of d,l‐Lactidyl/ϵ‐Caproyl Weight Ratio and Chemical Microstructure on Surface Properties of Biodegradable Poly (d,l‐Lactide)‐co‐Poly (ϵ‐Caprolactone) Random Copolymers
Source abstract
Abstract
The microstructure, thermal behaviour and surface properties of poly (d,l-lactide)-co-poly (ϵ-caprolactone) (PLA-co-PCL) random copolymers were systematically investigated. A transition from semi-crystalline to amorphous is observed when the average block length of the caproyl sequence is decreased below ∼ 3. In contrast to the ultra-flat surface morphology of spin-coated amorphous copolymer films, semi-crystalline copolymer films display rougher surfaces with spherulitic domains, whose typical diameters scale with composition. Surface chemical enrichment is not observed for any copolymer film. The wettability properties of the copolymer surfaces vary with composition as well as surface microstructure. These results serve as basis for the development of PLA-co-PCL based biodegradable implants and drug delivery systems.
