Metallic Implants - An Approach for Long Term Applications in Bone Related Defects
Source abstract
Abstract
Biomaterials play a key role in the replacement of body parts and restoration of human anatomical structures. Among these, the metallic materials occupy a leading role besides the availability of ceramics and polymers forhard tissue replacements. This review covers the importance of metallic materials as implants and their failure due to corrosion related problems and the need for surface modification to satisfy the demands of clinical interest. The effect of ceramic coatings on metallic implants as a vital technique to promote bone growth and to retard corrosion of metals beneath ceramic is also presented.
