Dendrite Formation and Self‐Healing Mechanism in Ionic Liquid‐Based Magnesium Batteries (Adv. Energy Mater. 11/2026)
Source abstract
Abstract
Magnesium Batteries In article number e05315, Timo Jacob, Hagar K. Hassan, and co-workers illustrate a self-healing mechanism in magnesium batteries: cycling short-circuited cells with highly stable ionic-liquid electrolytes induces localized self-heating, melting and fusing soft dendrites, enabling cell recovery. A key insight is the system-specific nature of magnesium dendrites. Mg(TFSI)2-based ionic liquids with high donor-number co-solvents and borohydride additives enable uniform deposition at high current rates, contrasting dendritic growth at low rates.
