Sub‐Single‐Crystal and Grain‐Boundary Bonding Strategy for Superior Battery Stability (Adv. Energy Mater. 35/2025)
Source abstract
Abstract
Lithium-Ion Batteries Ultrahigh-nickel cathodes promise high-performance LIBs but face challenges: traditional polycrystals crack, while single crystals suffer long Li+ paths and surface issues. In article number 2502841, Yan Cheng, Zhaozhe Yu, Xiangming He, and co-workers introduce a sub-single-crystal strategy using 1 µm LiNi0.93Mn0.07O2 particles bonded with Li3BO3. This shortens Li+ diffusion, enhances grain-boundary transport, limits electrolyte contact, prevents harmful phase changes, and improves stability. Full-cell tests with graphite anodes show 90% capacity retention after 800 cycles (room temperature) and 82% (60 °C), demonstrating significantly enhanced structural stability for practical applications.
