Abstract

Several types of failure observed in tin plate containers are described in terms of tin-steel potential and current relationships. The effect of Sn++ on potentials and polarization of tin and steel electrodes in deaerated 1N HCl and 0.1M citrate buffer is shown to be important to proper design of electrochemical test methods. Potential and polarization measurements indicate that inhibition by Sn++ is not a plating-out process. Hydrogen diffusion experiments suggest a relationship between hydrogen diffusion and inhibition by Sn++. Polarization studies have identified the iron-tin alloy as an important factor in tin plate corrosion. 3.8.2, 6.3.14, 3.6.8
