Abstract
The influence of overaging a 7075 Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy from T6 to T7X type temper on the composition of the near grain boundary solid solution has been investigated. Changes in measured stress corrosion crack growth kinetics resulting from such heat treatment have been correlated with differences in the electrochemical properties of the grain boundary solid solutions brought about by solute microsegregation. Microanalysis has been accomplished with a spatial resolution of < 20 nm using a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) combined with energy dispersive X-ray analysis.
