Abstract

Based on a thermodynamic partitioning of oxygen, a mechanism for the corrosion of stainless steel in flowing liquid sodium is suggested. This mechanism considers the equilibrium between sodium, iron, and their dissolved oxides. A reasonable agreement is obtained when corrosion rate values predicted by this mechanism are compared with those obtained experimentally using nearly 200 stainless steel specimens and employing four test systems operated under six different conditions.
