Abstract

Abstract A cathodic arc evaporation technology was used for the deposition of Al0.66Ti0.34N, Al0.66Cr0.34N and Al0.65Cr0.30Si0.04W0.01N hard coatings. WC–12Co–0.95Cr3C2–0.35VC cemented carbide with a grain size of 0.3 μm was used as the substrate. The corrosion resistance of the three coatings and the substrate was comparatively investigated by means of potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in a 3.5% NaCl solution at 25 °C. Based on the electrochemical data, the following orders are established: AlCrSiWN > AlCrN > AlTiN >> the substrate for the corrosion resistance, AlTiN (4.63%) > AlCrN (1.44%) > AlCrSiWN (0.99%) for the porosity and AlCrSiWN (97.9%–98.2%) > AlCrN (95.8%–96.4%) > AlTiN (94.2%–95.1%) for the protective efficiency. The corrosion dissolution mechanism was investigated by EIS at different offset potentials.
