Phenazine‐Based Antimicrobial Fabric Coating With Aggregation‐Induced ROS Generation
Source abstract
Abstract
ABSTRACT Airborne transmission of infectious pathogens poses a persistent global health threat, underscoring the need for antimicrobial textiles that function effectively under real‐world indoor lighting. Existing photosensitizers (PSs), such as porphyrins and organic dyes, exhibit limited reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation under low‐intensity visible light and suffer from photoinstability, restricting their practical utility in protective fabrics. To address these limitations, we present phenazine‐based hybrid coatings that incorporate silane sol–gel matrices to fabricate photobiocidal functional textiles. This hybrid design promotes molecular aggregation of phenazine derivatives, inducing a red‐shift in visible absorption and aggregation‐induced fluorescence quenching. These effects reduce radiative energy loss, enhance intersystem crossing, and improve both Type I and Type II ROS generation under low‐intensity visible light (~5.23 mW cm −2 ). The coated fabrics achieved antibacterial efficiencies exceeding 90% against both Gram‐negative E. coli and Gram‐positive S. epidermidis within 1 h of visible‐light irradiation. This study demonstrates that aggregation‐induced activation of phenazine‐based photosensitizers offers a scalable strategy for developing photobiocidal textiles capable of effective antimicrobial properties under practical conditions.
