Abstract

A prototype "C" size cell based on the inorganic electrolyte, and a carbon black cathode system has been developed. The cell has an open‐circuit voltage of 3.2V, a nominal capacity of 1.8 Ah, energy densities of 3.6 Wh/in 3 and 135 Wh/kg, and a cycle life of 50 cycles at 1A (3.4 mA/cm 2 ) discharge to a 2.0V cutoff with 0.1 A (0.34 mA/cm 2 ) charge. The cell can sustain periods of extended overcharge. Discharge below 1.0V is hazardous. Details of the prototype cell design, performance, and safety are presented here.
