New porphyrin-doped silica monolith: an effective adsorbent for heavy metal ions in aqueous solution
Source abstract
Abstract
A series of inorganic-organic hybrid materials, incorporating of 5,15-bis[4-(carboxyphenyl)]-10,20-bis[4-(isopropylphenyl)] porphyrin (trans-porphyrin) in the silica matrices were prepared by a sol–gel method. The effect of amine groups in the monolith and concentration of porphyrin in hybrid nanostructures on the adsorption amount of the toxic inons from aqueous solution was investigated. The experimental results demonstrated that amino-functional silica hybrid network is a better adsorbent than non-functional silica hybrid. In these hybrid nanostructures, the adsorption of cation results in a deformation of porphyrin core. This approach allows the development of various chemical adsorbents for the removal of heavy and toxic metals from wastewater. In this study, simple adsorbents based on porphyrin-doped silica monoliths have been synthesized that have a remarkable ability for removal of Ni+2, Cd+2 and Pb+2 ions in the water solutions.
