Abstract

Abstract A new type of solution-processable carbon nano-composite as a corrosion inhibitor has been synthesized by in situ polymerizations of poly (o-anthranilic acid) (PAA), graphene oxide (GO) and functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (f-MWCNT). Different types of material characterization techniques characterized the morphology and chemical composition of the prepared nanocomposites. The prepared PAA/GO/f-MWCNT nanocomposite showed the synergistic properties through the polymeric structure and the carbon fillers. A combination of corrosion inhibiting properties and increasing the surface area of PAA/GO/f-MWCNT can introduce it as an inhibitor with good performance in acidic media. Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were used to study the surfaces of the steel after exposure to test solution. Potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy show that PAA/GO/f-MWCNT can protect the stainless steel 316 (SS316) well in 2 M HCl acid environment by forming a protective layer on its surface.
