Abstract

Abstract In order to improve the mechanical properties and solvent resistance of silicone rubber (SR) without its sacrificing insulation, it is proposed to use molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2) nanosheets to reinforce the SR. The MoS2 nanosheets were prepared by lithium ion intercalation method, and then the MoS2 was modified with 3-mercaptopropyl trimethoxysilane (KH580) to improve the compatibility and interface interaction between MoS2 nanosheets and the matrix. The structure and morphology of KH580–MoS2 are characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that KH580 is successfully grafted onto the surface of MoS 2 nanosheets. After adding 3 phr KH580–MoS2 nanosheets, the tensile strength and solvent resistance of the SR are increased by 95% and 35%, and the thermal stability and solvent resistance are also improved. The interfacial interactions between KH580–MoS 2 nanosheets and SR matrix have been studied by thermodynamics, rheology and dielectric properties .
