Abstract

In this work, a new phenomenological model is proposed to predict the flexural modulus of symmetric structural foams with complex density distribution across their thickness. The model is based on a generalized Fourier series to represent the density profile and the simple square power-law relation to relate density with modulus. The model predictions are compared with data on polyethylene (LDPE and HDPE) structural foams produced by compression and injection molding. The results show that a very high degree of agreement (less than 3% deviation) can be obtained for these complex structures.
