Abstract

In this paper, a new type of poly(arylene ether nitrile ketone) resin (BP-CN) film was used in the carbon fiber/poly (arylene ether ketone) (CF/PEK-CN) thermoplastic composite to improve the interlayer performance. BP-CN films of different thicknesses were prepared by hot melt casting method. The CF/PEK-CN prepreg was prepared by solution impregnation technique while the composite laminates were molded under a pressure of 5 MPa at 360°C. The effect of BP-CN film thickness on the interlayer properties of CF/PEK-CN composites was investigated by testing the Mode I and Mode II interlaminar fracture toughness of the composites. The cross section morphology of the composites was characterized by SEM, and the toughening mechanism was discussed. The results show that the thickness of BP-CN films has great influence on the interlaminar toughness of the composites. The GIc with 20 μm film was 1196 J/m2, which was 384% higher than the control group. The GIIc with 50 μm film was 1442 J/m2, which was 95% higher than the control group. In combination between SEM images, it can be observed that there were obvious resin missing and bare fiber parts in the cross section of the control group. After the toughening process, it is evident that the bond between the resin and the fiber has become significantly tighter, with minimal instances of debonding observed. The incompletely melted BP-CN resin in the layers of the composite can absorb energy to mitigate crack propagation and enhance interlayer toughness when subjected to external forces.
