Novel transformation mechanism among precipitates in Mg-Gd alloys
Source abstract
Abstract
The metastable β ′ , β F ′ and β 1 phases are the principal strengthening precipitates in magnesium-rare earth alloys. However, the mechanisms governing the transformation between these phases remain unclear. In this study, we used high-angle annular dark field-scanning transmission electron microscopy to characterize β ′ , β′ F and β 1 phases in a Mg-10Gd-3Y-1Zn-0.5Zr alloy, and explored the transformation mechanisms using first-principles calculations. The experimental observations showed that the β F ′ phase act as an intermediate bridging phase between the β ′ phase and β 1 phase. By comparing the energy barriers calculated by the climbing image nudged elastic band method, we found that the transition from β ′ to β F ′ is more likely to proceed via a stepwise shear transformation. These results provide a deeper understanding of the precipitate evolutions in Mg alloys.
