Abstract

The interface properties of iron phthalocyanine (FePc) as well as partially fluorinated and perfluorinated iron phthalocyanine (FePcF 4 and FePcF 16 ) have been studied and compared. Well-ordered monolayers have been prepared and investigated with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) have been used to study the electronic structure of FePcF x in the monolayer in comparison with FePcF x in thin films. While the fluorination changes the structural ordering as well the total interface dipole, local interactions of the central iron atom and the Au(111) surface remain unchanged. The interplay of substrate–molecule and intermolecular interactions is discussed.
