Abstract

The impact-echo (IE) method was developed for concrete structures with a basic assumption of Poisson’s ratio being approximately equal to 0.2. The resulting equations to evaluate the resonant frequencies of cross-sectional modes of various prismatic solids using different shape factors are thus only applicable to those materials that have a Poisson’s ratio close to that of concrete. To remove such restrictions, this paper, based on the modal analysis technique, derives new equations to obtain the various shape factors and relative frequency coefficients that are suitable for the evaluation of resonant frequencies of circular rods made of materials with Poisson’s ratios in the range of 0.01 and 0.49. Comparison of the resonant frequencies using these new equations and experimental results with circular rods of six materials with different Poisson’s ratios (normal weight concrete, lightweight concrete, steel, gypsum, aluminum and monomer casting nylon 6) shows satisfactory agreement.
