Vibrational dynamics in disordered structures studied by the coherent potential approximation

Abstract
Vibrational excitations in a two-dimensional structural model with cellular disorder have been analysed by means of the coherent potential approximation (CPA). The origin of the boson peak (BP) in such a model is associated with the lowest van Hove singularity in the crystal, shifted downwards in frequency and smeared out by disorder-induced level-repelling and hybridization effects. The analytical results obtained are supported by precise numerical solutions.
