Flotation save-all cell operations

E.S. Rebarber

Abstract

What is the flotation save-all? Why is it needed? What does it do? How does it work? Does the flotation save-all cell operation matter? The flotation save-all can directly influence runnability and quality. If the flotation save-all cell is working properly we should expect the white water to be cleaner of fines and chemical residuals for overall better fiber utilization and fewer deposits (sheet blotches). There will be less problems with cloudy shower and dilution water plugging nozzles and valves. In addition, this system will help in minimizing variability and possible upsets in headbox fines content over time. The operation of the save-all is basically to remove fiber from the white water. This article provides the basic concepts of how a flotation save-all cell operates, and some suggestions on how to improve its function and its effects on the overall paper mill. A typical flotation save-all system is reviewed here; those similar to most older type save-ails currently existing in most mills. Yet, there are also some newer state-of-the-art save-ails in many mills that are different than the older versions, which need to be carefully studied in future work.
