Stress and Strain for Perforated Tensile Specimens, Part 2: FEA Simulations
Source abstract
Abstract
The stress and strain distribution near a hole in a tensile strip was investigated using the finite element program ABAQUS, incorporating a constitutive model designed for use with paper materials. Our objective was to study the nonlinear behavior in the vicinity of the hole at a point close to the failure loading point. The strain distribution around the hole for a sequence of loading levels was measured using an image correlation method. This work was reported in part 1 of this report (Tappi Journal, March 2007). In this part, a finite element simulation of the hole test is compared with the experimental data that was previously presented. The results show an excellent correlation between the experimental data and the simulation. The simulation shows that the strain associated with failure at the hole surface is exceeded long before the hole test sample fails catastrophically. An estimate of the extent of the zone of localized damage in the vicinity of the point of failure at the hole surface is presented. The application of the point-stress failure criterion for the paper used in this study is presented.
