Delignification by hot alkali extraction

Aki Vilpponen, J. Gullichsen, Carl-Anders Lindholm

Abstract

Previous studies have shown that brownstock lignin content can be reduced by slow leaching with water. Laboratory results obtained in this study show that delignification can be increased substantially by extraction in alkaline conditions at elevated temperature. The method shows promise as a means of delivering low-kappa-number brownstock to the bleach plant without suffering losses of bleached yield or pulp strength.
