Comparison of pulp pad streaming potential measurement and mobility measurement

J. G. Penniman

Abstract

An automatic zeta potential instrument generates data descriptive of the electrostatic charge of a pulp pad, utilizing the streaming potential principle. The streaming potential (difference in electric potential between a diaphragm, capillary, or porous solid and a liquid that is forced to flow through it), conductance, and temperature values are used to calculate zeta potential. A comparison is made of data generated by the streaming potential instrument with that obtained by the microelectrophoretic measurement of cellulosic fines. The kinetics of the two methods and the effect of varying Canadian Standard Freeness are also compared.
