TREATMENT OF EDTA- CONTAINING PULP AND PAPER MILL WASTE WATERS IN ACTIVATED SLUDGE PLANTS

C.G. van Ginkel, Janne Virtapohja, J. A. G Steyaert, Raimo Alén

Abstract

EDTA in wastewater from pulp and paper mills was biodegraded by activated sludge maintained under mildly alkaline conditions. Relative to treatment plants operating under acidic or neutral conditions, the alkaline system did not interfere with the biodegradation of other organic compounds. The results of laboratory-scale experiments were confirmed in two full-scale activated sludge plants. Application : this paper describes a new approach to reducing the amount of EDTA in wastewaters of pulp and paper mills.
