Abstract

Abstract Regioregular Poly(1-alkoxy-2,4- m -phenylenevinylene) was synthesized by Wittig reaction with salicylaldehyde as the starting material. IR and 1 H NMR spectra showed that the polymer contained predominantly trans -olefins. After isomerization, pure trans -vinylene linkages could be obtained. The polymer has fair to good solubility in common organic solvents. UV-Vis spectrum of the isomerzied polymer in THF solution showed one absorption band with absorption λ max at 316 nm. The fluorescence spectrum in THF solution exhibited a very narrow emission peak with emission maxima at about 417 and 434 nm. The full width at half-maximum of the emission peak is about 60 nm.
