Malachite green adsorption on Fe3O4@pinecone biochar formed in an attempted CaFe2O4 deposition

Daniel O. Oguntuyi, Olalekan Olabode, Hallie Mckinnie, Charles U. Pittman, Todd Mlsna

Abstract

Highlights • Pinecone biochar (PCBC) made at 500 ºC was impregnated at pH 10.3 by aqueous CaCl2 and FeCl3 coprecipitation, then reheated at 500 ºC gave Fe3O4@PCBC, not CaFe2O4@PCBC. • FTIR, XRD, BET, EA, and SEM-EDS analyses confirmed Fe3O4 predominated on PCBC surfaces. • Supported metal ferrite syntheses in literature not confirmed by elemental and other analyses could be suspect. • The Langmuir isotherm best describes the thermodynamics; pseudo-first order kinetics occurred. • Electrostatic, hydrogen bonding, and van der Waals attractions vs Malachite Green (MG) speciation were studied for MG adsorption (pH 2-9) onto Fe3O4@PCBC. • Adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic (ΔGº278-323 K = -23.7, -27.5, -29.4, -32.2 and ΔHº278-323 K = 28.9 (kJ/mol)) and creates greater disorder (ΔSº278-323 K = 189.1 J/mol•K).
