Abstract

In the thick of it: C60 spins rapidly in the solid but just how viscous is its motion on a perfect gold surface? Molecular dynamics simulations of C60 on a gold surface (see image) show the presence of a variety of molecular motions, where the entire cage spins and bounces on the surface. Two motions, namely the cage bouncing on the surface and the intercage rattling, govern the tribological properties of the system that are quantitatively similar to those of melt polymers.
