Nondestructive Characterization of Corrosion Properties of Stainless Steel and Titanium Alloys
Source abstract
Abstract
In this study, non-destructive characterisation of the corrosion properties of titanium and stainless steels was carried out. Stainless steel and titanium can be used in the nuclear reactor structural material applications. Corrosion products were obtained on the surface of the stainless steel and titanium plates during the accelerated electrochemical corrosion treatments. NaCl, HCl and H2SO4 solutions were used as electrolyte during the corrosion treatments. Radiography and tomography methods were used for the characterization. Contrast in the radiographic images was due to the density and composition differences. Contrast between the alloys and corrosion products was suitable. The specimens were also investigated by nondestructive ultrasonic measurements. Corrosion products decreased the ultrasonic velocity and increased the ultrasonic attenuation. Attenuation measurements were more sensitive than velocity measurements for the characterization of corrosion products. The highest attenuation was in the specimens immersed in HCl. The corrosion properties were also studied. Corrosion rate raises with the acid concentration and temperature. The highest corrosion rate was measured in the specimens immersed in HCl. Weight loss in the stainless steel was higher than Ti specimens. The highest weight loss was in the specimens immersed in HCl.
