Abstract
Feasibility of longitudinal surface waves on a free boundary of an elastic half-space has been studied. The roots of the characteristic equations derived from Rayleigh's equations for surface waves, which were previously interpreted as wave numbers of longitudinal surface waves, do not satisfy the latter equation.
